Footprints of the Martyrs of the Hosokawa Domain@No.10A
Genya Ogasawara and Miya Kagayama 1
Ogasawara Genya was the third son of Ogasawara Shosai. Shosai had originally
served Hosokawa Tadaoki's father, Fujitaka, and even after Fujitaka withdrew
from active life, yielding his position as head of the family to Tadaoki,
he continued to serve the master as one of the most reliable chief retainers.
Just before the Battle of Sekigahara, Shosai looked after Gracia
Hosokawa, and when Gracia was about to be caught and taken hostage by the
followers of Ishida Mitsunari, Shosai beheaded her. He then set fire to
the Hosokawa residence and committing hara-kiri by himself. Tadaoki,
wanting to recompense Shosai, was generous towards the rest of the Ogasawara
family, awarding Shosaifs eldest son, Nagatomo 6,000 koku (unit of land) and the second son, Nagara, 600 koku. He married off daughters of his relatives to Shosai's three sons, including the third son, Genya and treated them with particular courtesy to show his gratitude toward Shosai.
