Footprints of the Martyrs of the Hosokawa Domain@No.12B
Genya Ogasawara and Miya Kagayama 3
While Tadaoki was returning from Edo, Genya invited a priest from Nagasaki
and prepared to die a martyr's death. Tadaoki tried to make Genya
renounce his faith in order to help his family and sent a vassal to Genya
to say, "Renounce your faith in Christ and obey the orders of your
lord@(Tadaoki)."
Genya gave the following answer: "I did not become a Christian
out of a sense of duty to someone else or to satisfy my curiosity, but
because I knew with absolute certainty that only in this way would my soul
be saved. I have no intention of renouncing my faith."

A few days later, Tadaoki handed two letters to Genya. In one of them,
it was written "Even if the king (Ieyasu), the Shogun (Hidetada),
or my overlord (Tadaoki) order apostasy, I will not renounce my faith in
Christ." The other letter said, "I will renounce my faith
in Christ and return to the religion of my ancestors."
Tadaoki ordered Genya to give the matter careful thought and choose one
of the letters.
Genya's mind was already made up and he handed over the letter which said
he would not renounce his faith.
"For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses
his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?" (Matthew
16:26)
