Footprints of the Martyrs of the Hosokawa Domain@No.13A
Genya Ogasawara and Miya Kagayama 4
Although the overlord (Tadaoki Hosokawa) read this letter, he said nothing
about it and did not even mention Genya. In spite of having ordered
other Christian vassals to renounce their faith, he released Genyafs family
saying, "Let them off since they are my relatives."
However, the Tokugawa Administration strengthened its control and in 1619
the second Shogun, Hidetada Tokugawa, burned 52 Christians at the stake
at Rokujo-gawara in Kyoto to show the various daimyo what he was capable
of. Seeing what had happened, on October 15th of the same year, Tadaoki
without more ado ordered the Christians on his lands, including his chief
vassal Diego Kagayama Hayato, to be put to death. It was at this point
that Nagayoshi, Genyafs elder brother renounced his faith in Christ.
