However, the governmentfs proclamations against Christianity became ever
more severe. For five years, from 1614 to 1619, Tadaoki who valued
Hayato, endeavored to persuade him and his family to abandon their faith.
All the while acknowledging Tadaoki as his feudal lord and superior, Hayato
continued to serve him loyally, but he refused to give ground when it came
to his faith in Jesus. He remained faithful to Jesus, the true
Lord and Savior, not his master in this world.
"If my lord (Hosokawa Tadaoki) orders us to abandon our faith, I would
rather ask him to send someone to cut off the heads of my wife and I and
everyone in our family. I will not renounce my faith. My reply
does not mean that I am an ungrateful and boorish fellow. In all
aspects other than my Christian faith I will serve my lord faithfully and
loyally. However, I cannot renounce my faith in Jesus and be untrue
to myself." (Nihon Junkyoroku by Morehon Pedro) sequel.
"Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than
to God, you judge."
