The leaping flames lit up Kyoto’s night sky. The light was to spread all over Japan.
Other Christians, seeing God’s help in the spiritual strength of the martyrs who died looking up to heaven, taken away their fear of torture and death.
Even those who were not Christians were impressed by the faith of these people who had died for their beliefs.
Moreover, an enormous crowd of people had gathered at the execution ground, probably even more than that had gathered for the battle of Osaka in 1615.。
Many of the people who had come to watch came from other parts of Japan, and when they went home they told the people who had stayed behind about two things: the severity of the Shogun towards Christians and the heroic attitude of the believers.
Christians and non-Christians alike passed on the story about the Kyoto crucifixions and more and more people heared about it
Even today, the faith of these martyrs continues to be talked about in Kyoto and among Christians everywhere
Altogether 53 people, including Tekura’s unborn baby, were crucified in Kyoto’s Great Martyrdom.
And there also are many people died in prison before they were put on the cross.

The place where Tekura
died a martyr

The Kamo River, flowing calmly.
These days Kyoto people pass the site on their walks
There was white sand along the river and the cherry trees were in bloom
It was pouring with rain that day, but the rain stopped while we were taking photographs. Hallelujah. Thank you, lord.
